Exciting career opportunities abound in the biomedical sciences hub of Asia

Singapore is a leading biomedical manufacturing site in Asia. Major pharmaceutical, biotechnology and medical technology companies have invested in more than 50 commercial-scale facilities in Singapore, and are enhancing manufacturing excellence in areas such as sustainable manufacturing, process development, as well as upgrading suppliers' capabilities to address niche requirements. Today, Singapore is home to eight leading pharmaceutical and biotechnology companies as well as 25 leading medical technology companies.

Biomedical Manufacturing

Singapore is one of the foremost sites in Asia for biologics manufacturing with renowned biotechnology companies such asBaxter, Lonza and Roche investing more than US$2 billion in biologics facilities here. This builds on the city state's strong track record in both small-molecule active pharmaceutical ingredient and secondary manufacturing.

Pharmaceutical manufacturers with commercial operations in Singapore such as Alcon,  GSK, MSD and Novartis and, produce innovative medicines for the global market. Their facilities have also received zero major observation from international regulators such as the US Food and Drug Administration (FDA) and the European Medicines Agency (EMEA). Additionally, Singapore has established world-class scientific, ethical standards and excellent intellectual property protection for the manufacturing of new modalities (e.g. biologics and cell therapy) in Asia.

In medical technology manufacturing, Singapore has emerged as a leading global site in Asia. Manufacturers such as BD, EdwardsLifesciences and Medtronic have set up plants in Singapore producing sophisticated medical devices, such as pace makers and heart valves. Conglomerates like Johnson & Johnson andSiemens Healthcare  also have a strong presence in Singapore, producing diagnostics and consumer healthcare products.

Research & Development

There is a strong collaborative spirit between public and private sector research organisations in Singapore. Inviragen, Inc. and the Duke-National University of Singapore Graduate Medical School are carrying out joint research to better understand how emerging infectious diseases are transmitted and how transmission can be prevented. Through this, Inviragen and Duke-NUS aim to advance the research and development of vaccines against infectious diseases such as dengue fever, hand, foot and mouth disease, and chikungunya.

Today, 4,300 researchers carry out biomedical R&D in more than 50 companies including Albany Molecular Research, Inc (AMRI)’s Singapore Research CentreGSK and 30 public-sector institutes that expend more than S$1 billion each year. Singapore is also home to global contract clinical research organisations (CROs) likePPD which provides a range of clinical development services, including clinical trial management and monitoring. EPIC Bio, a joint venture between Emergent BioSolutions, Inc., and Temasek Life Sciences Ventures, Inc. will develop, manufacture and commercialise pandemic influenza vaccines and therapeutics, such as the H5N1 vaccine.
